Russia has offered to hold peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. This information was given in the report of BBC online on Thursday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by phone with the two governments. He made the offer in this phone call. He also called for an end to the war.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been embroiled in conflict in the disputed region since last Sunday. Hundreds of people have been killed so far in the conflict. This is the biggest fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in recent years.

Russia’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday that Sergei Lavrov had called the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan. In the phone call, he told the foreign ministers of the two countries that Russia was interested in holding peace talks to end the war.

In a separate phone call, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with French President Emmanuel Makhon about the war in Azerbaijan and Armenia. Both leaders reiterated the call of world powers for an immediate ceasefire.

Russia has a military alliance with Armenia. Russia also has a military base in the country. Russia, on the other hand, has close ties with the Azerbaijani government.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to cease hostilities immediately. The UN Security Council held a closed-door meeting on Tuesday to discuss the war. The meeting called for an end to the fighting. Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on both sides to end the fighting.

The hilly region of Nagorno-Karabakh was part of Azerbaijan during the Soviet period. In a war in the early 1990s, ethnic Armenian separatists occupied the region with the help of Armenia.
