Bangladesh, For the People, By the People

Title:Bangladesh, For the People, By the People

The parties in power often ignore the greater interest of the nation while striking deals on natural resources with the multinational companies. Signing of a contract with Conocophillips by the ruling Awami League on the Phulbari coalmine was not in line with its earlier stance against such a deal while in the opposition. The deal was signed without taking into consideration the interest of the people and the country as a whole.

The people, opposing the deal suggesting an open-pit mining, were subjected to attacks by armed hoodlums of the ruling party, legal actions and different types of harassments. Some of them, such as Amin, Tariqul and Salekin, even had to die for opposing the open pit coal mining in Phulbari. Like in the past, people are still being the victims of harassment by police, and armed cadres of the ruling party.

The natural resources of the country belong to its people, and the people are ever resolute in protecting their own resources. People are the ultimate target of all efforts for economic development. So, what kind of economic development is being talked about without taking into account the interest of the people?
