Title:Annual boat race held in Khulna

Khulna, Bangladesh. October 11, 2015 [DrikNEWS] – A traditional boat race was held on Saturday at the Rupsha river in Khulna with huge enthusiasm and festivity among the local people. Nagar Samajik o Sangskritik Kendra (NSSK), Khulna, arranged the competition with a view of promoting the Bengali culture and heritage. The race sponsored by mobile operator company Grameenphone delighted the people thronged at both banks of the river. Near about two and half hours boat race began from no-1 Custom Ghat area in the city at around 2.30pm and ended at Khanjahan Ali Bridge area at Rupsha Upazila in the district. A total of 26 boats from different upazilas in Khulna, Satkhira, Gopalganj, Narail and Madaripur took part in the daylong race. Thousands of people including considerable numbers of women and children from different districts across the country gathered on the bank of river Rupsha to enjoy the race. Administrator of Khulna District council and President of district Unit Awami League Sheikh Harun-ur-Rashid inaugurated the boat race and also distributed the prizes as chief guest. Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Mostofa Kamal was also present on the occasion. A tune of festivity swept over the area centering round the race as various types of floating shops were also set up both banks of Rupsha. Traditional boat racing is a part of our culture and heritage for hundreds of years as rivers form an integral part of our history, tradition, literature, culture and sports.
