Shelters wiped away in river erosion

Title:Shelters wiped away in river erosion

Gaibandha, Bangladesh. July 22, 2015 [DrikNEWS] – River erosion has turned to be monstrous in Govinda village of Shaghata upazila. More than 500 families took shelter in dams. Nearly 50 bighas of lands including Govinda graveyard and mosque are under water now. Govinda Governement Primary School was sold in auction for nearly $1200 in 1997 to avoid destruction by river erosion. But the Water Development Board seems to be reluctant to evade river erosion in this area. According to Gaibandha Water Development Board sources a project defending erosion of nearly $1.69m was passed, but only in paperwork supposedly. Hundreds of families, schools, villages, private organisations, landmarks etc. are in the risk of being destroyed in river erosion. Affected families are living an inhumane life.
