Title:The Ratha Yatra

The Ratha Yatra Bogra, Bangladesh. July 20, 2015 [DrikNEWS] – The ‘Ratha yatra’ festival of the Hindu community started on Saturday in Bogra. Ratha Yatra or Ratha Jatra or Chariot Festival is a festival that involves moving deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshana on a chariot (called a ratha or rotho). ‘Ratha’ in Odia means chariot and ‘jatra’ means journey. The festival thus refers to the annual journey of the divinity in the form of idols. The famous festival that is celebrated usually in the month of June or July commences when the chariots of Lord Jagannath accompanied by his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra are brought out on to the main street. The Chariots are taken to their “aunt’s” house where the deities enjoy a nine days stay and are served with sweet pancakes. During the parade, devotees chant and dance ecstatically and the whole parade is colored in the most vivid hues of sheer joy and enjoyment and is flocked with devotees who wish to pay their honor to the deities and seek their blessings. The festive mood among people was doubled as the Eid-Ul-Fitr was also scheduled on the same day. Photos: Shafiq Islam / Bogra
