Tomato farmers counting losses due to political instability

Title: Tomato farmers counting losses due to political instability

Farmers of Akandpara village of Nepaltoli union, Bogra are in trouble with their tomato farms. Political instabilities are forcing them to sell tomatoes at an extreme low price. Nearly 200 bighas of lands are being cultivated here as tomato farms. Most of the farmers cultivated their lands with loans taken from samity (village club). The farmers’ dream of high profit went in vain in this political situation. Previously tomato businessmen used to buy 7-8 trucks of tomatoes everyday, whereas this amount has now decreased to merely 1-2 trucks a day. Tomatoes are growing and ripping in farms. Farmers urge to the government for financial assistance to help them overcome from this situation. Story prepared by Mst. Rebeka Akter, DrikNEWS Correspondent, Bogra, January 2015.
